Uriel has spent more than 30 years surfing the waves around Salina Cruz and more than 20 years guiding surfers through this coastline.

URIEL CAMACHO
Before I learned to surf, I learned to listen to the ocean.
I was nine years old when I learned to swim in the ocean, at the beach break where I grew up in Salina Cruz. Before entering the water, I would always say the same thing:
“Hola,ola como estas.”
I learned by playing with the ocean — swimming into waves, feeling their energy and figuring out how to move with them. One day, instead of riding over the crest, I stretched out an arm and dropped down the face. For the first time, I saw the inside of a barrel.
I had discovered bodysurfing without ever seeing anyone do it.
Years later, I brought a 7’0 single-fin home from a second-hand market in Tijuana. Five friends shared that one board at Punta Conejo. Five waves each. A surfing magazine was our only reference.
No coach. No internet. At first, not even wax.
We learned through wipeout after wipeout after wipeout.
More than 30 years later, those early lessons still shape the way I surf and guide. Technique matters, but surfing begins before the takeoff. It begins with reading the ocean — positioning, timing, wave selection and learning to move with its energy instead of fighting it.
I learned surfing from the ocean. That same knowledge guides every surf day.

Growing up here meant discovering these waves long before Salina Cruz became an international surf destination. Over the years, that connection has grown into something more — a responsibility to help protect the coastline that shaped his life.
Uriel has worked alongside local surfers and conservation organizations to help protect Punta Conejo and the surrounding coastline for future generations.
The same waves that taught him how to surf are the waves he now helps protect.
